Wade Ellis Sr was the twelfth African American to be awarded a Ph.D. in mathematics. He worked on radar and taught at Boston University before being appointed as a professor at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where he served for 19 years. From 1967 he served as professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan and Associate Dean of the Horace H Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
