Definition: Maximum (Real Numbers)

Let \(D\) be a non-empty subset of real numbers. The real number \(M\), denoted by \(\max(D)\), is called the maximum of $D$ if and only if

• $M$ is a supremum of $D$, and
• $M\in D$.
